The Best Additions to the OED: March 2017

If you read this title and scratched your head… yeah. I apologize. This post is pretty late. About two months late. I can’t believe I missed the OED additions for March. And oh boy are there some good ones in there. So let’s get right into it, shall we? Here are the best new additions to the OED for March, 2017.

1) Throat sing, v.

If you’re not familiar with throat singing, you should be. It’s a very impressive style of singing where you like, grunt and whistle at the same time? And then you grunt some more? I really have no idea how to describe it. Just watch this video. It’s more metal than Cannibal Corpse.

2) Queso, n.

It’s about damn time. It’s always awesome when foreign words officially make their way into the English language, but you and I both know this one has been around for a hell of a lot longer than last March. Where would we be without queso? Our chips would be cold and lonely. Our beers would be falling into empty stomachs. Queso, I salute you.

3) Pogonophobia, n.

I hate that I’m putting this in here. I actually had to look it up just to see what it meant, and apparently it’s an extreme fear or dislike of beards. Who the hell put this in there? That’s ridiculous. You know what? At least pogonophilia was already in there before pogonophobia. Take that, beard haters.

4) Canadianness, n.

There’s a whole slew of ‘Canadian-‘ words added to the OED this time around. I can only hope this means that something is nice and polite. I’m going to try to use this in a sentence sometime today, and you should, too.

5) Al pastor, n.

Once again, here’s another fantastic Spanish word getting officially recognized. And what a delicious one ‘al pastor’ is. Tacos al pastor, for those who don’t know, are basically slices of beef, pineapple, onion, and seasoning stacked up onto a spit and roasted, only to be cut off and cooked right before they’re put into a taco. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

6) 420, n.

Now that something’s in the dictionary, it’s not cool anymore. Right? Isn’t that how it goes? God I hope so. I swear if I have to hear “It’s 420 bro!” one more time, I’m going to make it my life’s mission to kill 420. Yeah. You should be worried. In middle school, my friends and I made it our mission to kill ‘your mom went to college,’ and you don’t hear anyone saying that anymore, do you?

7) Spooge, n. & v.

This is just funny. If you don’t laugh at this, go read something else.

8) Queef, n. & v.

See entry 7.

Well that’s about it, I think. There were a bunch of sub-entries added, but those usually aren’t as fun. Did I miss any awesome, silly, or ridiculously stupid words that got added to the OED in March? Let me know in the comments.
